School History/Facts

Our Lady of Lourdes School was established in 1959 to provide Catholic education to the children in the Montclair area. Four sisters belonging to the Presentation Congregation came from Ireland to staff the school. On opening day, the enrollment was 270 students in grades one through six.

By 1963 there were eight sisters serving with the grade levels expanded to include seventh and eighth. From the beginning, the school has experienced strong support from the parents. This, combined with the support of the founding pastor, Fr. Joseph Mackey, has provided a solid foundation for the school.

In 1966, the first addition was made to the school with the construction of a new library. This building was subsequently converted into a kindergarten in 1989.

Due to the needs of other schools in other dioceses, and the increase in the various ministries for religious, the number of sisters gradually decreased to five. By 1977, the number was reduced to five. Dedicated lay teachers were hired as members of the faculty. At present, the staff consists of three sisters, including the principal, nine full time lay staff members and three teacher aides.

The Learning Center was built in 1989. This building comprises a computer room, faculty room, library, office space, two restrooms, and much needed storage space.

Our Lady of Lourdes School continually strives for excellence, and its instructional program has strong Catholic orientation. Dedicated professional administration and faculty, interested parents, and eager students have been the key factors in the successful history of Our Lady of Lourdes School.
